Let freedom ring!! As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday we would do ourselves well to consider the freedoms the founders of our nation envisioned and whether that vision is still clear. I was reminded recently of how easy it can be to let the constant social-political noise of (social) media cloud our thoughts and feelings.
That sentiment was further backed up by a few recent reports I’ve read as the world comes to America for the World Cup. Many visitors are simply fascinated by our way of life, our opportunities and our culture. What would our viewpoints be if we encountered our country for the first time over this holiday from somewhere far off?
Would we be amazed that we can go virtually anywhere in this great land and view the mountains and the valleys and the oceans as we pleased?
Would we marvel at the size of the typical American home with multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, living spaces and kitchens?
Would our national parks and spaces, monuments to history and the ingenuity displayed in thousands of public and private buildings and installations leave us awestruck?
Would we be impressed at the opportunities (for the most part) that allow us to choose work that fulfills our spirit instead of only our bank account?
Would it surprise us how many people in communities all across the nation come together to help those in need without waiting for the government to step in?
Would the number of opportunities to freely access educational opportunities, from thousands of libraries to hundreds of universities, impress us?
Would the fact that we can band together with one-another and freely discuss viewpoints on important topics even to the point of igniting legislative changes be something that we’d be mystified by?
Yes, indeed. The freedoms our forefathers foresaw and our generations of patriots fought for are still there. And yes, sometimes our fight to protect them gets a bit heated or goes off track for a time. But the fact is, if we look at the United States with the eyes of a newcomer, we will feel more blessed and proud to be Americans. Happy Birthday America and may we all celebrate many more Independence Days together, as only division can keep us from greater successes!
